rust metal face

day 218

another discard - side of the road, maybe? i don't remember. there were a couple of them - the other one being in the shape of a cow... they make noise in the wind - they cast wonderful shadows!

shadows for future photos, perhaps...

noises to ward off the pests

brainerd bats wine

day 217

they talk of the many famous folk who attended school here - but on this day i felt like i was the special one - she wanted to see where i spent my ninth grade.

the festival was a celebration of wine and beer and stinky old cigars... a fundraiser to help the building that the chimney in this shot belongs to.

but when dusk came we discovered who the chimney really belonged to - the bats.

if you click on the picture you can see some of the several dozens of bats circling around this mighty spire of former spew - unnoticed by many indulging below

road not taken

day 216

i used to wonder - sometimes into the late night... why i turned my back on my education to be a teacher.

it was a good, close guess - as to who i am or even was.... but it was the wrong answer - and i knew it.

even then.

today. after visiting a friend in kenosha wisconsin.... i passed my training grounds. it seems even more barren, now.

but i know, now, that my decision not to teach high school was the correct one.

and i know - that only i can know that.

day 215

yes.  he's still with us.  for now we call him, "puppy" but there have been many suggestions.

what would you name him.....?

in the ground

day 214

today's post is literally a hole in the ground. I spent a good part of the day digging out a rotten fence post in order to replace it with a fresh new solid one. I was surprised that the fence-putter-inners sunk these posts into 2 1/2 feet of solid concrete!

I have three more to replace.

new pond friend

day 213

i knew he'd been there for awhile this summer.... the telltale kerplunk of his escape into the water when he would hear my approach.

then:     he knew. i wasn't out to harm him or his environment.

and:      he posed.

my new friend.

hyacinth bean unfurl

day 212

you really only have to buy this plant once.

every year it makes so many seeds that - even if you have a bad year - you can go for a few years.... and still share with friends!

this year... i'm keepin' my fingers crossed.

'nuff said.

this bee was all over the echinacea - it's been a difficult year in the garden due to the severe drought that we are still experiencing despite the recent rainfall

the w.c., see...

day 208

for twenty-one years this has been the view from the most solitudinous chamber in the b&b we stay at in stratford, ontario, canada...

the white antique tile - placed ever so tightly together with almost no room for a line of grout - yet. there it is.

the glass doorknob.   and. of course: the bookshelves!

i've read every title!

self harnessing puppy

day 207

he's a very clever young fellow - staying with us for a bit longer than the other pups

in this particular instance he's managed to turn his leash into a harness!

maybe we should stop calling him, "puppy" and start calling him, "einstein!"

good ol' docs

day 206

the first time i wore them i thought, "ooh... i made a very expensive mistake..."  but anyone who has ever loved these boots knows: your feet form to the boot.

the last time i wore them was one of the times i seal-coated my driveway - then chucked them into the front porch - only to be archeologised today, all dog-hairy and drab.

the leather dry and torn - laces frayed - their soles cracked and worn

stained with seal-coat and paint

today i said goodbye to my very first pair of docs

form and function

day 205

ok. i'm back from canada - where i saw this sly minx - a turntable whose beauty i just could not capture with my camera.
if you ever find yourself in southwestern ontario - do yourself a favour and pop on by "music" in sebringville - that's where i came across this gorgeous piece of machinery

bonus picture: a different angle....

day 204

now - when i travel through elkhart, indiana i think of seth, who is from there.... or sarah, who i've traveled through there with at various points in my life

otherwise i wouldn't think of it at all.

when i'm there i'm getting close to home - and that just makes indiana seem even longer

the texture of comfort

on a rainy birthday morning... as on every other day at the festival - jason pops his head out of his tent and demands, "georgie...... coffee or shower?"

well...... coffee, of course.

day 202

i haven't seen him for decades - then tonight: I did. i saw him.

rock star friend

day 200

i kinda hoped that someone had written it all down - the bottom line is that i don't believe i have laughed so hard since one night in northampton way back in '05(but that's another story.... maybe another blog). the mythology grew into a code of names and sayings - a build up to two-thirty am. no one wanted it to end but the voice of reason had turned in earlier, being from the coast, and we all had to take a matchbook of responsibility and start a fire under our own two feet toward bed.

next day:

this - an official temporary tattoo making the rounds and accompanying eric lee's new long player for sale in the merch tent - was captured on his fair kate's arm under the overcast afternoon while he played on stage.

he's a rock star.... it's true.

most importantly, though.... he's our friend.... and for now - he's safe again.

i am back from the falcon ridge folk festival out in hillsdale new york - during the grand slambovian's saturday night set the crowd went wild with the traditional umbrella twirling during the song, alice in space.

see raging bull

day 195

there are two things you have to make sure of when you ride coasters:

1. you are with someone who you will not run out of things to talk about with.

2. you will be able to pay attention to that person while your awareness is constantly drawn away by the beautiful design of the coasters around you.

every time the line shifts you get a different perspective!

it's something i never imagined i'd see at a six flags - the coaster has been torn out and the surrounding structure sits exposed and empty, waiting for the crew to take it apart and put it to rest.

never one of my rides of choice. the iron wolf - a stand-up roller coaster.

weird.

groom and grandmother

day 184

this was a big wedding in a small town - guests came from all over the country as well as from a few doors down

some were there in spirit - and even though missed greatly - were present within us

there are times when good feelings permeate the atmosphere and transcend wavelengths that we don't even know that we understand or comprehend

this was one of those times
